I was 47 years old when someone asked me a simple question that destroyed my entire life.

I was at a family dinner.

My nephew a college freshman who'd just declared himself an atheist looked at me across the table and said: "Uncle Rob, you call yourself a Christian. Can you explain to me what the gospel actually is? Like, what does that even mean?"

Everyone stopped eating.

All eyes turned to me.

My nephew wasn't being hostile.

He genuinely wanted to know.

And I'd called myself a Christian my entire life.

Baptized as a baby.

Confirmed at 13.

Married in a church.

Called myself a believer for 47 years.

So I opened my mouth to answer... and nothing came out.

I stumbled. "Well, it's... you know, it's about Jesus dying for our sins and... um... rising again, and... believing in Him..."

"But WHY did He have to die?" my nephew asked. "And what does 'for our sins' actually mean? Like, specifically?"

I had no idea. I literally could not explain the most basic concept of Christianity—the gospel—to a 19-year-old who genuinely wanted to understand.

And in that moment, I realized something terrifying: I'd spent 47 years calling myself a Christian, but I had absolutely no idea what I was claiming to believe.

Have you ever felt this way?

You call yourself a Christian. Maybe you were raised that way.

Maybe you prayed a prayer at some point.

Maybe you believe in God.

But if someone asked you to explain what the gospel actually is... could you do it?

What if the answer to that one question determines whether you're actually saved?

The Question 93% Of Christians Cannot Answer

That dinner conversation haunted me for weeks.

So I started asking other Christians the same question my nephew asked me: "Can you explain what the gospel is?"

The answers were terrifying:

"It's about being a good person and going to heaven." (No.)

"It's the story of Jesus." (That's not an explanation.)

"It's believing in God." (Even demons believe in God—James 2:19.)

"It's about love and forgiveness." (Vague and incomplete.)

Out of 30 people I asked—people who all called themselves Christians—only 2 could actually explain the gospel clearly.

That's 93% who couldn't answer. And these weren't just cultural Christians. These were people who prayed, who went to church (some of them), who read Christian books, who posted Bible verses on Facebook.

They called themselves Christians, but they couldn't explain the most fundamental truth of Christianity.

Then I found a survey that confirmed my informal experiment: 67% of self-identified Christians cannot accurately explain what the gospel is.

Two-thirds. The majority.

And here's what made my blood run cold: Jesus Himself said in Matthew 7:21-23:

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven...

Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and in Your name perform many miracles?'

Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you.

Away from Me, you evildoers!'"

Read that again.

People who called Jesus "Lord." People who did miracles in His name. And Jesus said, "I NEVER KNEW YOU."

What if the 67% who can't explain the gospel are the same people Jesus will reject on Judgment Day?

What if calling yourself a Christian isn't enough?

What if you actually have to KNOW what you claim to believe?

The Terrifying Statistics About People Who Call Themselves "Christian"

I couldn't sleep that night.

So I started researching. What I found horrified me:

📊 70% of Americans call themselves "Christian"

But:

60% can't name 5 of the Ten Commandments
58% can't name the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
48% don't know who delivered the Sermon on the Mount (it was Jesus)
45% think "God helps those who help themselves" is in the Bible (it's not)

Even more terrifying:

Only 37% of self-identified Christians say they read the Bible once a week or more
Fewer than 20% have ever read the entire Bible cover to cover
Less than 10% could pass a basic test on Bible knowledge

We call ourselves Christians. We say we believe.

We claim Jesus as Lord.

But most of us don't actually know what we're claiming to believe.

We don't know God's Word. We don't understand the gospel.

We're just... using a label.

And Jesus said in John 8:31-32: "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

IF you abide in My word. IF. Not "if you call yourself a Christian." Not "if you believe in God." Not "if you're a good person." IF YOU ABIDE IN MY WORD.

Then—and only then—are you truly His disciple.

Most of us aren't abiding in His Word.

We're just... existing with a Christian label we inherited or adopted but never actually investigated.

What If You've Been Calling Yourself Christian But You Don't Actually Know God?

Let me ask you something.

And I want you to be brutally honest with yourself.

If you died tonight and stood before God, and He asked you, "Why should I let you into My heaven?"... what would you say?

Would you say, "Because I'm a good person"?

Would you say, "Because I went to church sometimes"?

Would you say, "Because I believe in You"?

Here's the terrifying truth: Even demons believe in God. (James 2:19) Believing isn't enough.

Jesus said in John 17:3: "This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

Not know ABOUT Him. KNOW Him.

And the only way to truly know Him is through His Word. Not through sermons you heard. Not through Christian books or podcasts. Not through vague feelings or childhood memories of Sunday School.

Through His Word. Through understanding the Bible.

But here's the problem most of us face: We've never actually read the Bible. Or we tried and got completely lost.

Why I'd Never Actually Read The Bible (Even Though I'd Called Myself Christian For 47 Years)

After that dinner disaster, I decided I was going to read the Bible.

The whole thing. Cover to cover.

I was going to figure out what the gospel actually meant.

What Christianity actually taught.

What I'd been claiming to believe for 47 years.

I got to Genesis chapter 4 and was already confused.

All these names. These genealogies.

Why were they there? What did they mean?

I pushed through to Exodus. Moses, the plagues, the Red Sea—okay, I remembered these stories from childhood.

But then I hit Exodus 25 and it's just... endless descriptions of tabernacle construction.

Curtain measurements. Lampstand specifications.

I thought, "What does this have to do with my life?"

Then came Leviticus. I gave up by chapter 3. Pages and pages of sacrificial laws.

Grain offerings. Blood sprinkling. Instructions about animal organs.

I quit. Again.

And I realized: This is why I'd never read the Bible in 47 years.

Every time I tried, I got lost. Confused. Overwhelmed.

I didn't understand WHO was writing, WHY it mattered, or what I was supposed to get from it.

I felt stupid. Like everyone else just "got it" and I didn't.

Maybe you've felt this way too?

The Seminary Professor Who Showed Me What I'd Been Missing

That's when I did something desperate.

I tracked down my old college professor—Dr. Harrison, who'd taught a required "Intro to Christianity" course I'd slept through decades earlier.

He'd retired from teaching but still answered his phone.

"Dr. Harrison," I said, "I'm 47 years old.

I've called myself a Christian my entire life.

But my nephew asked me to explain the gospel and I couldn't do it.

I tried reading the Bible to figure it out, and I can't understand it.

Am I stupid?

Am I just not spiritual enough?

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something that changed everything:

"Robert, you're not stupid.

You're just doing what 99% of Christians do: trying to read the Bible like it's one book written directly to you as a 21st-century American.

"WHO wrote it. WHY they wrote it. FOR WHOM they wrote it. What the MAIN THEMES are.

And what the KEY SYMBOLS mean. Once you have that framework, the Bible goes from confusing to crystal clear."

He walked me through it using the book of Romans as an example.

WHO wrote it? Paul, a former Pharisee who encountered Jesus.

WHY did he write it? To explain how both Jews and Gentiles are saved by grace through faith, not by following laws.

FOR WHOM did he write it? The church in Rome—a mix of Jewish and Gentile believers arguing about whether you had to follow Jewish law to be saved.

MAIN THEMES: Justification by faith. Grace vs. law. Unity in Christ.

KEY SYMBOLS: Adam vs. Christ. Old covenant vs. new covenant.

Suddenly, Romans made sense.

It wasn't random theology. It was Paul answering specific questions for specific people in a specific situation.

He did the same thing with Leviticus—the book I'd quit on.

WHO wrote it? Moses.

WHY? To give priests instructions on maintaining holiness.

FOR WHOM? The Levitical priests.

MAIN THEMES: Holiness, sacrifice, atonement.

KEY SYMBOLS: Blood sacrifice pointing forward to Jesus.

Suddenly, Leviticus wasn't boring. It was showing me WHY Jesus had to die.

Why His sacrifice mattered.

Why we call Him the "Lamb of God."

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just reading the Bible.

I was UNDERSTANDING it.
